What are Lilies?

True lilies belong to the genus Lilium

There are many plants which have 'lily' as part of their common name. "Calla" or "Arum" lilies for example, aren't Liliums at all but belong to the genus Zantedeschia. "Torch Lily" is a Kniphofia, "Lily of the Valley" belongs to Convallaria. These are all beautiful flowers and it isn't surprising that they are considered to be lilies.

But members of the genus Lilium, or true lilies, are quite distinct from other "lily" plants and have distinguishing characteristics.

HOW DO THEY GROW?

The Lily Society has a discussion on cultivation of lilies at most monthly meetings. If you would like to learn more about lilies, why not come along? See our Programme for dates.

Here are a series of photo pages and information showing the lilies' progress from the beginning of a season (October in our southern hemisphere) right through to the end.
